Chapter Seven

Abby didn’t have a lot of time to think about her predicament since they were slammed at work. The ER had been hopping with the cooler weather bringing in colds, pneumonia, and even some flu. She found herself working late each day and getting home after dark. The guys texted her every day to check in with her and tell her they were thinking about her. It felt good to have someone thinking about her. She hadn’t had that since she’d moved away from home.

Since this was their rotation to work the weekend, she was surprised when Saturday afternoon her doorbell rang, and it was Ben and Ricky.

“Wow, hey, guys. Didn’t expect to see you this weekend.” She stepped back to let them in.

They looked handsome in their uniforms. Both men also looked worn out. They must have had a busy weekend so far.

“We were just finishing with a call in your neighborhood, so we thought we’d stop by and see how you were. We can’t stay or anything, but…” Rick trailed off.

“How are you feeling? Almost can’t see the bruises anymore. What did the doctor say yesterday?” Ben asked.

“I’m on crutches now and can skip the rolling monstrosity. I’m happy about that. He said everything was healing well. Another four weeks and I should be good as new.” Abby squeezed the handle on her crutches to try to calm her nervousness.

“That’s great news, babe,” Rick said.

“You feeling okay otherwise?” Ben asked.

“Yeah. I’m not tired like I was, which is good since we’re working overtime at work right now. You guys have been busy, too, if the ED charts are right,” she said.

“Yeah, we’ve been rocking and rolling all weekend,” Rick said.

“We wanted to see if we could take you out to eat Tuesday night,” Ben said. “We get off our rotation Tuesday morning and wanted to see you.”

“Oh, um, sure. I’d like that. I think we need to talk anyway,” she said, avoiding their gazes.

“I don’t like that sound of that,” Rick said, lifting her chin so that she had to look into his eyes. “Talk about what, babe?”

“Us. I’m not sure what is going on between us,” she said, licking her lips.

Ricky followed her tongue with his eyes as she did. It sent a thrill of electricity down her spine. She shivered in reaction.

“We can talk about that, but we can tell you right now that we like you and want to see where this attraction we have leads. We are attracted to you, Abby. I think you’re attracted to us, as well,” Ben said.

“It’s just that there are two of you and one of me,” she finally managed to get out around the lump of discomfort lodged in her throat.

“We noticed,” Rick said with a grin. “Don’t worry so much about it. We’ll talk Tuesday night.”

“Okay.”

“Got to run, honey. We need to restock our truck before we get called out again.” Ben kissed her on the cheek and then hugged her tightly.

Rick took her from Ben when the other man let her loose and kissed her on the lips before hugging her, as well.
